I am an Artist currently exploring ideas of reality/truth and representation. Filmmaker John Smith commented, ‘All film is fiction in that it is literally ‘made up’- from controlled representations of chosen phenomena which are ordered selectively to construct meanings. All film is factual in that, as well as existing physically it presents ideas born out of experience.’ It is this idea of questioning the ‘objective truth’ that is central to my current practice. I am also interested in the distance between the viewer, the world they inhabit, and the creator, the world they depict. How does understanding become distorted in this transitional phase? How do layers of process build up to create a paradox in which the viewer has to accept the image whilst at same time being made constantly aware that it is a representation, not reality. I work primarily in film as the durational qualities of the medium allow me to explore this idea of a distance, a journey, a transitional phase, time.
