Field trip to Manchester, [Future Everything]

We planned a trip to Manchester's Future Everything festival which shows a series of technology inspired artists who looks at topics from social media to mass online sharing. It was a really inspiring trip, and originally our trip may have ended in disaster when we arrived and were told the exhibition was not ready for viewing public, but in return we were allowed to join their artists tour of the work, and the launch that evening. It proved even better to get a first hand account from the artists themselves to explain their concepts and the ideas behind their work.

There was a great interactive element in most of the works, that involved the viewer as part of the technology sharing experience. From pieces aiming to create ant ballet from pheromones, and live twitter feeds relating to life and death, there was a real diversity and playful ethic of the works involved, and its setting in the Manchester Museum of Technology. This is certainly not just an exhibition for those interested in art, its avenues relate to anyone and everyone in the modern age and our obsession with technological advances. There is an almost humorous undertone through some of the work that questions how far it is we go within these modern necessities we have now become so accustomed to. A lift filled with hundreds of Facebook profile pictures makes us smile and cringe in equal parts, as we see either parts of ourselves or people we know in those images. The public and private distortion between sharing personal information has become so blurred as uses of social media such as Facebook grows in popularity. We must ask ourselves whether these everyday online staples have become so out of context that we forget we are offering our private thoughts and information to the internet, and this is accessible by anyone. This is proved very much so in the interactive parts of the exhibition where viewers can tap into live feeds from twitter, ramblings and statements from real people offering their thoughts to the world.

The first initial interaction with the work is delightful, but its the sheer complexity of the technology used behind each piece of work that allots real credit to the artists and their impressive innovation. Some of the artists' explanations of their processes is rather mind blowing and challenging for the average viewer, which makes the work even more intriguing. Similarly to its setting in a museum, where new knowledge and understanding offer curiosity and intrigue, we were certainly fascinated by what was on display at Future Everything. Clearly the boundaries between technology and art are becoming less concrete as we know it. Just as our lives and technology continue to intertwine.

The Way Forward Poster/Flyer

In the office last week I was given the task of doing some more designing for the marketing. I designed a A4 poster that would fold in half and become a information flyer for The Way Forward exhibition, it has all the details of the exhibition and the featured artists. It is a really satisfying and rewarding task to design promotional material, to see it go from design to print.

Open submissions for DUAL are now looking for artists!

The Way Forward is just round the corner!!!!

So earlier this week Viv and I spent another busy in the office. Our check list of things to do included collecting the information on the Open Call Monitoring forms and putting them into a spreadsheet. It is interesting to know who applies and how we might be able to target our promotional material to get more people to apply. We did things like research CRB checks and search for the cheapest printer and ink combo so if there are any suggestions, we would love to hear them! We also made the information sheets for the artists showing in The Way Forward exhibition. These sheets will be available at the exhibition as a way of giving the viewer a bit more background information. I personally enjoyed making these and found some about interesting pieces of work that the artists have produced in the past. One piece I particularly liked was the 'ghost-writer' by Neil Mendoza and Anthony Goh. It consists of a type-writer that writes on its own. It communicates with the viewer by writing things to them like 'Stop looking at me'.It is exciting to see all these artists come together in the one show, The Way Forward is just round the corner now!, 23rd May, a date for the diary! I am very much looking forward to seeing our commissioned piece, The 'Skywriter' by Institute for Boundary Interactions. This piece sees the local art group recreate old methods of encryption in a Skywriter situated on the roof of Nottingham Playhouse. I love this idea that the exhibition spreads through the playhouse and beyond the confinements of the building itself! Anyway, back to the listings, The Way Forward is going to be one not to miss!

Shortlisting from an Intern's point of view

Jo and I have been looking through the open submissions. It is our first time going through this process of shortlisting artists, and finding the submissions most relevant to the concept of The Way Forward. Feeling strangely like a judge panel on the X factor, Jo and I were both really inspired by the work submitted. This process is actually extremely rewarding. From a curatorial point of view, finding artists who have made work that has responded to the brief in the best sense, is really exciting. As Jo has said, the variety was extremely broad which just goes to show how a brief can be interpreted in so many different ways. We've had submissions from local Nottingham, to all the way from the US and Germany!

Good luck everyone who has submitted.
We will be looking through submissions for DUAL soon.

Open Submissions!

We had a lovely day today looking through all the open submissions! The variety was massive, some were really good and some where a bit off topic but overall it was really enjoyable. We narrowed it down to our favourite seven so hopefully it will be good!!! I have also been thinking about the writing the play copy so have been researching various cheesy Artist based jokes.
Here are just a few that I found-
- What did the Artist say to the dentist? Matisse hurt!
- Vincent Van Gough walks into a bar and the bartender offered him a drink. No thank you, said Vincent, I've got one 'ere.

Workshops

This week as been pretty quite for the interns. We have just returned after the Easter break and unfortunately, due to lectures and the bank holidays we have not been able to get into the office this week. We are next in on Monday and are looking forward to catching up! I did however attend two meetings on Tuesday. One was about the workshops and I found it interesting. I am looking forward to being involved and will be writing up an information pack for the schools shortly.

Season Launch

On the 23rd March Nottingham Playhouse had their season launch. This involved different departments within Nottingham Playhouse presenting their plans for the coming season. The Cutting Room talked about the up and coming exhibitions and did very well when answering the spontaneous Q&A that followed their presentation. I found it interesting to be able to put what we are doing in context, drawing parallels between the topics explored in the plays and the themes that our exhibitions examine. The season launch in general was an aspect that I haven't been involved in before. It was exciting to meet the artist after all the work we have been doing with images of the piece. I also started working with Photoshop this week and designed a banner for the way forward exhibition. This was something I wanted to expand on within the Internship role and so was happy to be able to experiment more with the programme.

CAST bar programme poster

Digital Stage is offering someone the opportunity to receive a £500 commission on a new film. This is open to all those who submit to any of the following exhibitions: The Way Forward, Dual and Play. This will be a great chance for anyone interested in film to show in the CAST bar, situated at the fore of the Nottingham Playhouse. Anyone who is interested in possibly submitting to any of the exhibitions, please check the Cutting Room website for more information and application forms.

As well as designing the poster for the CAST bar programme opportunity, I have been busy completing the rest of the Origins film screening proposal which will give cinemas and other institutions the chance to show the Origins selection of artists films.

Playhouse Spaces

On Monday I was taking photos of the space in Nottingham Playhouse. We will be using these photos to make an information leaflet for the Artists so they have a better idea of the location. We also booked tickets to the Future Everything Festival on the 16th May. The festival 'allows artists, musicians, technologists and future-thinkers to share, innovate and bring the future into the present.' This will be our first outing as a group and I am very excited about it! On the marketing side of things, the mailchimp mailing list is ongoing. I aim to finish it by the time I am next in the office. Remember to keep an eye out for information on how to subscribe on our website. Also, follow us on twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with all our latest events! http://www.facebook.com/thecuttingr00m and https://twitter.com/#!/TheCUTTINGR00M

Working on Origins

Today I was busy with collating data from the recent Origins screening in December, which will be touring soon. From the questionnaires that were collected from this screening, I set out the information in a table on Excel to evaluate the results. After this, I was busy reformatting the Origins information handout, that will need to be sent around, and the text made more legible.

Here's a small preview of the edited handout I completed today:

It has been our first day in the office as a whole team, Clare was finally able to join us today. We are planning a cutting room outing to Manchester in May, to see the 'Future Everything' Festival. It's really exciting, and we've heard we get free tickets to Romeo and Juliet at the Playhouse for attending the season launch. The perks of the job just keep getting better!

Dual : New Graphics

We've been busy doing odd jobs and a bit of everything. I got my hands on designing the new web banners for the second exhibition: Dual. This exhibition will concern issues around avatars and digital identities.

Look our for announcements for this upcoming exhibition, information about submitting work for this event are already live on the cutting room website if you are interested in participating.

Week 4 in the Office!

Our little office is becoming a proper hub of activity, We have a nice set up and tea on tap! We were in Monday and Tuesday of this week and were primarily looking at sponsors. Its all about researching the company and linking their interests with our own, which is time consuming and repetitive, but I strangely quite liked it. I preferred it to looking for the funding anyway. When you find a relevant quote it is satisfiying, it feels like yes, got ya! I have also been working on the marketing side of things. I learnt how to use tweet deck which was useful and I have also been updating our mailing list system. We are now on mail chimp which means you will be able to sign up to the mailing list on our website and select areas of interest that you would like to recieve information on. So, once I fully get to grips with it, prepare yourselfs for some really good newsletters/campaigns!

Jaki Middleton and David Lawrey

I have been trying to find out the cost of shipping two crates from Nottingham to Australia. We are really interested in having 'The sound before you make it' (2005) by David Lawrey and Jaki Middleton in our 'The Way Forward' exhibition. This piece is a three-dimensional stroboscopic animation that collides moving image history with our own pop culture recollections and it fits perfectly with the ideas we want to explore within exhibition and supporting workshops! The cost of shipping seems to vary greatly but I am trying my best to find a quote that works with our budget. We really want to show this piece if possible!

The Way Forward : New Graphics

We met again on Monday to discuss some new promotional material for the Cutting Room's upcoming event 'The Way Forward'. I was given the task of designing a new web banner for the event.

'The Way Forward' Banner, designed by Vivienne Du
It was definitely fun to do a bit of design work and see it actually being used to promote the site not long after completion. It is a nice change to do some design work on the side of my practice.

The featured artwork is an interactive installation by Neil Mendoza and Anthony Goh "Escape" that was recently installed in the V&A; a series of old mobile phones and electronics transformed into kinetic sculptures that sing and move like birds when a phone number is dialled by the viewer.

(Credit to Toby Wolf for his photographs featured in the banner.)

Find out more about 'The Way Forward' exhibition and how to apply here: http://www.the-cutting-room.org/Templates/thewayforward.html

I am currently in the process of posting the open call submissions for 'The Way Forward' on various sites to invite artists to apply for this upcoming exhibition. If you are interested, please check the Cutting Room website for more details.

New Facebook Page

So today I have been busy working on making our Facebook page more active in the Facebook community. The aim of the new page is for us to be able to post on the walls of others as well as have them post on ours, http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003491320404. It wasn't a particularly difficult task but it was quite time consuming and it made me realise just how much work really goes into managing/promoting an event, even on the seemingly simpler tasks such as the Facebook page. I have also been looking for printing quotes so we get our leaflets printed. I think a local company would be ideal but I will carry on looking around and see what comes up. It is nice to be a part of the whole process and I am looking forward to my next day in the office.

Introducing the Interns

We are Vivienne Du and Jo Hooper, and this is our first day on the Digital Stage internship. Over the next 19 weeks we will document our experiences in curation and event management, our new contacts with the art industry in Nottingham.

Digital Stage logo

We will be taking part in a series of events and exhibitions in the forthcoming months, including 'The Way Forward' (23rd May - 8th July) which will explore old technologies used in new ways. It will explore re-enactment, re-creation and repetition of the past. More information about upcoming events will be available via The Cutting Room website.

http://www.the-cutting-room.org

We have been introduced to the events being planned and organised this year, and helped with arranging the dates in which all the tasks would need to take place. There is certainly a of planning and organisation that goes into an exhibition/event before it is realised. We have been given responsibility to enhance The Cutting Room's Facebook presence, and create this blog.
